How Your Corporate Gift Program Can Lead To More Sales

It is a universal law.  You get what you give.  It's true in our personal lives and it's true in our business relationships.  We are where we are because of our customers.  Yet each year thousands of businesses fail to thank their customers for the support and business they have given throughout the year.

Everyone wants to feel appreciated.  Most people, while they don't actively seek it out, tend to view a formal acknowledgment of their contribution in a positive light.  In short, it makes them feel good about themselves and about you.  Your customers desire appreciation as well.  While they may not seek that appreciation out in any way, they do like being thanked.  Sometimes all that is necessary is to pick up the phone and thank them for their order and their business.  Other times, a simple thank you card or note might suffice.  But one way to really communicate to your customer your appreciation is with a thoughtful gift. 

Gifts take many forms.  And because of the abuses in the past, many organizations have a put policies in place that regulate gift-giving between buyers and sellers.  In fact, some organizations forbid their buyers from accepting gifts under all circumstances.  This is understandable because an unbridled corporate gift program can lead to a wide variety of abuses.  Organizations want to be sure that their buyers are purchasing your items based on company needs and not because they will win a trip or get a color television.  So, before attempting to give any gift to your buyer, make sure that you are aware of the policy.  Typically, the policy is outlined in your vendor agreement.  If not, you can simply call the purchasing department, or even the human resources department, to get a copy of the guidelines for your particular customers.  You will find however, that most companies allow gifts, but may put a limit on the gifts dollar amount.  Often, companies, especially smaller businesses, have no policy in place, and in this instance, you simply just need to follow your good judgment. 

There is nothing wrong with giving an appropriate gift to acknowledge your customer for their business.  And for this purpose, imprinted promotional items are ideal.  Clocks, pens, watches, leather portfolios and similar items, make excellent thank you gifts.  Your buyers will appreciate them and it is unlikely that a gift program built behind imprinted promotional products will be abused.  In fact, it will become a tremendous plus for your organization.  Why?  Because your buyers do business with people they like.  It is rare that someone will enter into a business relationship freely, with someone they don't like.  When we like the folk that we do business with, we do more business with them.  Giving a tasteful thank you gift to your customer shows your appreciation and quite frankly it is a kind and considerate gesture.  A goodwill gesture such as this resonates favorably with your buyer.  It will help to solidify your relationship and, because your buyer does business with people he likes, will lead to more business for your organization.
